    Description

Up for your consideration is a portion of stratiform stromatolite from the Middle Member of the Deep Springs Formation on
the side of Mount Dunfee near Gold Point in Esmeralda County, Nevada.  Microbialite and stromatolitic algae were the primary reef-building organisms at this site during Deep Springs time and the reefs were indeed massive.  The Deep Springs Formation records a time of transition and evolutionary change as the Ediacaran was coming to an end and about to be replaced by the newer life forms of the Lower Cambrian.  The base of the Cambrian (or said another way, the end of the Ediacaran) is now generally agreed as 542 million years ago based upon geochemistry Basal Cambrian Carbon Isotope Excursion (geologists use the Acronym BACE for this transition event).  The Mount Durfee stromatolites record the time immediately prior to the BACE making the strata there important in its own right.
    This
specimen was already naturally eroded out of the strata and were collected exclusively from the talus slopes below the large outcropping stratiform stromatolites rather than by direct removal from the strata.  We support the idea that it is important that the in-place materials will be available for future generations of paleontologists.  Of course, an added benefit is that the material already weathered out of the strata have undergone some differential erosion that highlights the lamellar growth habit of the stratiform stromatolitic algae.
    This specimen measures 5.5" x 5.5" x 2" on the longest chords.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the common name of the plant, the Latin name of the genus or species, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
